Nikolaus Schapfl studied under Diether de la Motte, Isang Yun, Franz Zaunschirm, and James MacMillan among others. He gained international acclaim for his operatic version of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. His compositions have been performed by the Shanghai Philharmonic, the Karlsruhe State Theatre Orchestra, the Muenchner Rundfunk Orchester of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Philharmonie Salzburg, and by world-renowned soloists.  In addition to working in the classical and contemporary idioms, he has written musical scores for motion pictures, including for Oscar-winning director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
